The 90 Illini #21: Miles Osei August 11, 2012

Miles Osei
Quarterback/Wide Receiver/Running Back/Maybe A Little Kick Returning
6′-0″, 200 lbs.
Junior (on scholarship, 3 years to play 2)
Prospect HS / Mt. Prospect, Illinois

ALE Ranking last year: #41
ALE Ranking in 2010: #70

What I Know About Him:

He’s not a starter, so why is he #21?  Versatility.  I’m pretty sure you will see Miles Osei return a kickoff, catch a pass, take a handoff, and throw as pass this season.  Most likely before October.

My NIU friend says they were overjoyed to have Osei coming in to be their QB of the future.  Their plan (according to him) was to redshirt him, have him play a little as a freshman, and then take over this season as their starting QB.  But a funny thing happened on the way to DeKalb – Illinois offered and Osei made the switch.

What I Expect From Him:

If you ask me which player I’m expecting way too much from, it’s easily Osei.  He’s almost my default fix-all.  We lost four receivers in June and are lacking depth?  That’s OK, Osei can do it.  No juniors or seniors at tailback? That’s OK – Osei.  Need another QB that can run the read option part of our new offense?  That’s OK – Osei.  Who can return kickoffs?  That’s OK Osei.  Just plug him in anywhere and presto, it’s fixed!

In reality?  I think he helps the most at receiver.  I love Miles Osei with the ball in his hands, so let’s get him the ball as a slot receiver.  And returning kickoffs.  And then maybe even motion him into the backfield on a few plays. Or better yet, motion into the backfield to take a pitch and then throw for a 32 yard touchdown to beat Purdue.
