90i #54: Fritz Rock July 10, 2013
6′-1″, 200 lbs.
Junior (on scholarship, 2 years to play 2)
Wayzata High School / Golden Valley, Minnesota
What I Know About Him:
When he arrived, Rock was similar to Trevor Kanteman this year: wasn’t part of any recruiting class, but was available in the summer and we had open scholarships, so “surprise” – this class will have one more addition.
Rock was the MVP of the state championship game in Minnesota back in 2008, took a year off of football, and then landed at Illinois in the summer of 2010. He was tried at safety first, but was then switched to wide receiver before the 2011 season. He played a little bit last year, catching 5 passes for 50 yards.
What I Expect From Him:
After a solid performance in the 2012 spring game, I expected that he would play more than he did in 2012. If you would have given me 5 catches for 50 yards, I would have taken the over.
Because of that, I’m not sure what to expect this season. I know the seniors will all play (Lankford, Harris, Osei, and Hull). And I’m pretty sure juco transfer Martize Barr will see a lot of passes thrown his way, as will Justin Hardee. But after that, I’m just not sure how deep we will go. Rotate seven guys? Eight? No idea how Cubit will handle it.
If he goes seven or eight deep, then Rock will be battling a couple walkons (Peter Bonahoom and Tim Lukas), sophomore Kenny Knight, redshirt freshman Devin Church, and a couple true freshmen (Dionte Taylor and Marchie Murdock) for that spot in the rotation.
It’s weird. Until just now, talking that out, I don’t think I realized how many receivers we have on the roster. Lankford, Harris, Osei, Hull, Barr, Hardee, Bonahoom, Lukas, Knight, Church, Taylor, Murdock. And Rock. And I even feel like I’m forgetting a few people.
However it shakes out, this is probably the make or break year for Rock. Can he crack that rotation? Hope so. We need some bigger receivers out there.
