90i #83 – James Crawford June 10, 2013
6′-2″, 200 lbs.
True Freshman (on scholarship, 5 years to play 5)
St. Thomas Aquinas High School / Fort Lauderdale, Florida
What I Know About Him:
I know he played at the top high school in the country (as did punter Justin DuVernois and tailback Dami Ayoola). And I know he’s Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson’s nephew. So there – James Crawford has already blown away all of the other players in the freshman class in the “fun facts” category.
And I know they want to try him at the star position – our hybrid linebacker/safety spot. Not sure if he’ll end up there or at strong safety, but given our depth issues at star, I think they’ll give him a long hard look there. We’re going to try Juco transfer Eric Finney at star, and his backup is redshirt freshman BJ Bello, but beyond that, there’s really no other players at that position (while each of the inside linebacker positions has maybe four guys on the depth chart). See, now I’m getting that “I should have placed Crawford higher” feeling again.
What I Expect From Him:
There’s a theme here for players ranked in the 80′s of the 90i. The last few years it has been “you know the drill – he’ll redshirt, get stronger…”, but this year it’s “you know, he’s probably ranked too low because we have depth issues at his position”. And Crawford is probably ranked too low because we have depth issues at his position.
Still, Tim Beckman is trying to build a program, and you can’t build a program if you’re playing all of your true freshmen. So I expect Crawford to redshirt. Especially if he’s going to play Star. If that’s his position, he needs a lot more strength and bulk before he’s ready to play there.
