Oh Robert. First of all, fantastic “Dad’s Day” post. You do have a gift.
.
As for “From the Stands”, you’re right. We have just seen this all too much. However, have we ever, in all the years of futility, had this bad of an offense? We’re down 10-3 and have the ball. Nathan to Millines for 9 yards and all I immediately could do was panic in my brain that he didn’t get the first down. Second and 1 feels like 4th and 25. .
I’ll finish with 3 points:
1) 3 points
2) 3 points
3) 3 points
.
It’s really just unbelievable.
Stunning is the word. I have been going to every IL game I could (both bball and fball) since I was a kid growing up in Springfield 35 years ago. The worst feeling for me was the end of the San Jose State game that we lost at home when you knew something in the program had “died”. This feels much more stunning than that did. This is when you realize that the situation you thought was really, really bad…is actually worse than you imagined. This is the “there is no S.C.” feeling you got when your older cousins ruined Christmas for you.
I can’t imagine a worse situation. Fire TB and we’re screwed. Keep him and we’re screwed. It is stunning…
I think firing Beckman after 1 year would send a message that Illinois is serious about winning and could actually at the very least fire up the fanbase that I’m sorry to say…is dead. Today was a wonderful day in Champaign and there was nobody there…the student enthusiasm is as low as ever. I think the biggest part of being a winning program (before you actually win games) is to create a buzz or an expectancy of winning….and firing Beckman (IMO) does that. Letting him stay does nothing but let the wound fester and basically say to the Illini fan base…”its business as usual and we are going to support are completely inept coach because you know..we’ve always done that”….If i’m a donor and still hear this attitude (after the years of Ron Guenther)…i’m done.
I haven’t seen the numbers but saw alot of people in the stands yesterday, surprised that a 2-7 team could draw that well.
Firing Beckman this you would send a message, alright. Do you want to risk 2 more bad years for 20? It would be a program killer.
