The 90 Illini #59: Pat Flavin July 4, 2012
Pat Flavin
Offensive Tackle
6′-7″, 260 lbs.
rs-Freshman (on scholarship, 4 years to play 4)
Benet Academy / Lisle, Illinois
ALE Ranking last year: #76
What I Know About Him:
Here’s my official position on the redshirt freshmen offensive tackles. Yes, official position. You ready? This is groundbreaking stuff. Here we go. I think McDowell plays sooner. But I think Flavin has the higher ceiling.
Insane stuff, right? The high 3-star guy with offers from Oregon and Cal = “high ceiling”; the lower-ranked recruit who is already closing in on his playing weight will play sooner. Boom. There it is. That’s how I feel.
Flavin is 6′-7″, but 260 lbs. For comparison, Jay Prosch will suit up at fullback for Auburn this fall and play at around 255 lbs. So my guess is that Flavin has another year of weights and the Mike Tisdale diet in front of him, with a few plays here and there.
What I Expect From Him:
Given that we only have four offensive tackles on the entire roster, Flavin likely plays this fall. Probably just mop-up duty here and there, but I’m guessing he’ll be out there. His redshirt-freshman counterpart Scott McDowell will likely be our third offensive tackle (and yes, I’m mostly basing that on McDowell’s 295 lbs), and Flavin will be fourth guy.
In 2013, I expect Flavin to push for playing time. Every coach offering him a scholarship last year saw the same thing. A 6′-7″ frame with long arms and good footwork who could be a fantastic college offensive tackle… once he builds the strength and gains the weight.
Maybe we could send Beckman and Groce down to Alabama to re-recruit Prosch…
Robert~Don’t sleep on Corey Lewis…He’s making remarkable progress!
It’s really difficult to discuss football with temperatures >100 until october.
I hope Corey Lewis makes a showing this year. He really deserves a break (as do we).
