Thoughts:
+ I’m still a Mikel Man, but after my Camp Rantoul visit, I think Daniel Dufrene is the starter and the go-to guy. And I’m good with that. The more seniors, the better. In nearly every facet of the game.
+ I was hoping to see a “Charest’s Solid Camp Moves McGee To Receiver” article by now, but I guess it’s not happening. Which means Eddie is back on this depth chart as the backup QB (and removed from the two-deep at WR). This doesn’t necessarily mean that Eddie won’t find minutes at receiver – I think Zook wants him on the field somewhere. It just means that Charest might not be ready yet.
+ The good news: Greg Fuller appears to be ready to start at fullback in his first game as a freshman. The bad news for Fuller: with our new twin TE offensive set mixed in, minutes for a fullback in this offense have been cut even further. Maybe to one-out-of-every-10-snaps territory.
+ The best news: Justin Green is as fast as advertised. And in the pass catching drill I watched, he appeared to have good hands, too. A triple option shovel-pass to Justin Green out of the two tailback set – for this I cannot wait.
+ We probably go 10 deep at wide receiver, with Fred Sykes and Chris James working their way in there at some point. In order of number of snaps, I would say it plays out like this: Benn gets the most (duh), followed by Fayson, Cumberland, Jenkins, Duvalt, Scott, Hawthorne, Ramsey, James, and Sykes. And Eddie. And what the hell – Martez, Derek Dimke, Lou Hernandez, and a tackle-eligible Leon Hill. The new Mike Schultz offense: Everyone Catches A Pass.
+ The only change I made to the offensive line depth chart is Ryan Sedlacek over Tyler Sands at backup center. But neither is really our “backup center”. If something happened to Block, Jon Asamoah would slide over to center with Pocic or Cornell taking his place.
Defensive depth chart tomorrow. Including a few surprise freshmen! (If I had an editor – or a publication, for that matter – she would be so thrilled with that tease).
I think McGee would make a good slot receiver, he did well there last year in limited action.
